Solar pumps for farms

Water for your crops in the daytime, without waiting for grid power

A solar pump runs on sunlight. No waiting for the power supply schedule, and no diesel to buy. We size, install and service solar pumps for borewells and open wells across Coimbatore and nearby districts.

  • Runs in the daytime on sunlight
  • No diesel running cost
  • For borewells and open wells

Pump sizing guide

What size pump and panels does my well need?

Pump size depends mainly on how deep the water is and how much water you need each day. Use this table as a rough starting point.

Indicative only: These sizes are indicative only. The right pump and panel size depends on your water level, the water you need per day, pipe length and your land. Final pump and panel size is fixed only after a site visit.

Know your pump

Which type of solar pump is right for you?

Two simple choices decide the pump: how it is powered (AC or DC) and where it sits (inside the well or on the ground).

AC pump or DC pump

DC pump

What it is
A pump that runs directly on the power from the solar panels, through a small controller.
Usually used for
New solar pump setups, especially small and medium sizes.
Keep in mind
Works straight with solar, so there is no separate inverter to buy, and it uses sunlight efficiently. But if the pump fails, spares and repairs can be harder to find than for a normal AC pump.

AC pump

What it is
The same kind of motor most farms already use. With solar, a pump controller (drive) changes the panel power into AC power for the motor.
Usually used for
Bigger pumps, or when you want to keep using a motor type your local mechanic already knows.
Keep in mind
Motors and spares are easy to find nearby. But the controller adds cost, and a little power is lost in the conversion.

Submersible pump or surface pump

Submersible pump

What it is
A long, thin pump that goes down inside the well or borewell, under the water.
Usually used for
Deep borewells, where the water is far below the ground.
Keep in mind
Can lift water from great depth and runs quietly. But for any repair, the pump has to be pulled out of the well.

Surface pump

What it is
A pump that sits on the ground, next to the well, and sucks water up through a pipe.
Usually used for
Shallow open wells, ponds and canals, where the water is close to the ground.
Keep in mind
Easy to see, check and repair. But it can only pull water up from a shallow depth, so it does not suit deep borewells.

Government scheme

PM-KUSUM: the solar scheme for farmers

PM-KUSUM is a government scheme that helps farmers use solar power for farming. It has three parts:

  • Component A

    Small solar power plants

Farmers or farmer groups can set up small solar power plants on barren or fallow land and sell the power to the grid.

  • Component B

    Standalone solar pumps

New solar pumps that work on their own, without a grid connection. Useful where there is no power line, or to replace a diesel pump.

  • Component C

    Solar for existing grid pumps

Adding solar panels to a pump that already runs on grid power, so the pump can run on sunlight during the day.

Scheme terms change. Contact us and we'll check current eligibility and subsidy for you.

Whether a subsidy is approved, and how much, is decided under the scheme's rules at the time you apply. We help you check and apply, but we cannot promise approval.

How it works

From site visit to running water

  1. Step 1

    Free site visit

We visit your farm, see the well, check the water level and find a shade-free spot for the panels.

  2. Step 2

    Pump and panel sizing

Based on depth and the water you need, we suggest the pump type, HP and panel size, with a clear quote.

  3. Step 3

    Paperwork

If you want to apply under a scheme, we help you with eligibility and documents.

  4. Step 4

    Installation

We install the panels, structure, pump and controller, test it with you and show how to use it.

    After-sales support

We stay in touch for service, cleaning tips and repairs whenever you need us.

Farmers' questions about solar pumps

Will the solar pump work on cloudy days?

Yes, but it gives less water. On a lightly cloudy day the pump runs slower. On a very dark, rainy day it may run only for a short time or not at all.

That is why we size the system with some margin, and many farmers store water in a tank or farm pond on sunny days.

Can I run the pump at night?

A standalone solar pump runs only when there is sunlight, so it works in the daytime. Batteries for night pumping are costly and usually not worth it for farms.

The practical way is to pump in the daytime and store water in a tank or pond. If your pump is also connected to the grid, it can still run on grid power when supply is available.

How much maintenance does a solar pump need?

Very little. Wash the panels with plain water every one to two weeks, because dust reduces the water output. Keep the panels free from shade of trees or sheds.

Now and then, check that the wiring and the controller are dry and tight. For anything more, call us and we will help.

My farm is in an open field. Are the panels safe from theft and damage?

We fix the panels on a strong structure with anti-theft bolts that are hard to open with normal tools. A simple fence around the panels also keeps out cattle and people.

We also install proper earthing and lightning protection, so the system stays safe during storms.

How do I choose the right pump HP?

It depends on how deep the water is and how much water your crops need each day. The sizing table on this page gives a rough idea, but the final size is fixed only after we visit your well.

Will I surely get a subsidy under PM-KUSUM?

We cannot promise that. Scheme terms change, and approval depends on the scheme's rules and your eligibility at the time you apply.

Contact us and we will check the current eligibility and subsidy for you, and help with the paperwork if you decide to apply.

Can I replace my diesel pump with a solar pump?

Yes. A solar pump can take over the work of a diesel pump, and after that there is no diesel to buy for pumping. We will check your well and suggest the right solar pump size.
